Background of the Study
The exponential growth of genomic data, driven by advances in sequencing technologies, has created significant challenges in data storage, retrieval, and security. Traditional storage systems are increasingly strained by the volume and complexity of genomic information, necessitating innovative solutions to manage these vast datasets efficiently. Blockchain technology, with its decentralized and immutable ledger system, offers a promising approach to address these challenges. At Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, researchers are exploring the optimization of genomic data storage and retrieval using blockchain to enhance data security, integrity, and accessibility (Suleiman, 2023). Blockchain's inherent features, such as transparency, traceability, and resistance to tampering, make it an ideal candidate for managing sensitive genomic data. The integration of blockchain technology into genomic data management can facilitate secure data sharing among research institutions while ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations. This study focuses on developing a blockchain‐based framework that streamlines the storage process, optimizes data retrieval, and provides a robust mechanism for data validation and audit trails. By leveraging smart contracts and decentralized storage solutions, the proposed system aims to reduce the risk of data breaches and unauthorized access, which are critical concerns in the field of genomics (Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, the framework is designed to be scalable, allowing it to accommodate the continuous influx of genomic data without compromising performance. The interdisciplinary nature of this research, which combines principles of computer science, bioinformatics, and information security, underscores its potential to transform genomic data management practices. Through a series of pilot implementations and performance evaluations at Ahmadu Bello University, the study seeks to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of using blockchain technology in a real‐world genomic research setting. Overall, the project aspires to set a new standard for genomic data management by providing a secure, efficient, and scalable solution that meets the demands of modern biomedical research (Abdul, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
The management of genomic data is confronted with several pressing issues, including data security, integrity, and efficient retrieval, which are not adequately addressed by conventional storage systems. At Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State, the rapid accumulation of genomic datasets has exposed the limitations of traditional databases, which struggle with scalability, susceptibility to cyber threats, and difficulties in maintaining data provenance. The decentralized and immutable nature of blockchain technology presents a potential solution; however, its application in the context of genomic data storage and retrieval remains largely experimental (Ibrahim, 2024). Current systems lack the necessary infrastructure to handle the integration of blockchain with large‐scale genomic datasets, leading to challenges in data indexing, retrieval speed, and system interoperability. Moreover, the absence of standardized protocols for blockchain implementation in biomedical research results in fragmented approaches that fail to deliver optimal performance. These limitations not only hinder the efficient use of genomic data for research but also raise concerns regarding data privacy and security. This study aims to address these challenges by developing a blockchain‐based framework that optimizes genomic data storage and retrieval. The proposed solution seeks to improve data integrity, reduce access latency, and enhance overall system scalability while ensuring compliance with data protection regulations. By addressing these issues, the research intends to create a robust and secure data management system that can support the growing needs of genomic research and facilitate more effective data sharing among stakeholders (Abdul, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To design a blockchain‐based framework for genomic data storage and retrieval.

  2. To optimize data access and ensure secure, immutable data management.

  3. To evaluate the framework’s scalability and performance in a real‐world setting.

Research Questions

  1. How can blockchain technology improve the storage and retrieval of genomic data?

  2. What are the challenges in integrating blockchain with large‐scale genomic datasets?

  3. How does the proposed framework enhance data security and access efficiency?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the application of blockchain technology to revolutionize genomic data management. By developing a secure, efficient, and scalable storage solution, the research addresses critical challenges in data integrity and access, ultimately facilitating advanced genomic research. The findings will provide a model for integrating blockchain in biomedical data management, with potential benefits for research institutions and healthcare systems (Suleiman, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the design, implementation, and evaluation of a blockchain‐based framework for genomic data storage and retrieval at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State. It focuses exclusively on genomic data management and does not cover other biomedical data types.

Definitions of Terms
